Funtek's orchestration of Mussorgsky's piano masterpiece, completed in the same year as Ravel's, has become more widely appreciated since the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra introduced it on its foreign tours. It dispenses with some of the Ravelian colour, emphasising with its keen choice of instrumentation the musical realism, narrative and moods depicted in Mussorgsky's walk through the gallery.
