In his “New Magazine for Music”, Robert Schumann was one of the first to pay tribute to the composer Franz Schubert, who was little known until then. In a review on the occasion of a quartet evening in 1838 he wrote about the quartet "Death and the Maiden", which is presented here in the parts edition with the Urtext of the New Schubert Edition: "Only the excellence of a work like Schubert's in D minor ... can offer some consolation about the early and most painful death of this first-born Beethoven; he has done and accomplished in a short time, as no one before him.
