Zululand, written to honor the Zulu people of South Africa, employs an original melody and orchestration based loosely on the Zulu call-and-response song, ŒñShaka Mamba,Œî also making use of a partial setting of ŒñNikosi SikelelŒÍ AfrikaŒî in the middle section. The percussion plays a prominent role in the piece, giving it a sound authentic to the music of the Zulu people.
